Breast Reconstruction Case #102
Case #102 Details
This 46 year old mother of two was referred to us by a breast surgeon in our area that we work very closely with. The patient had breast cancer and the breast surgeon was performing a nipple sparing double mastectomy. This very busy working mom had a great and positive attitude and wanted her reconstruction taken care of at the same time, during the same surgery. As this is the type of procedure that Dr. Romanelli performs often, we were happy to examine this patient and inform her of her options.
Examination showed that she would benefit from what we call a ‘direct to implant’ procedure wherein Dr. Romanelli steps into the operating room right after the breast surgeon is finished the mastectomy. Dr. Romanelli places silicone gel implants under the chest muscle, supported with alloderm, a regenerative tissue often used in reconstruction surgery.
The results are quite stunning. The patient was able to wake up from surgery with (new) breasts intact, which can bring emotional comfort when facing a cancer diagnosis.
