Sun Spots, Brown Spots, Age Spots: Different Names, Same Solution

Explore the array of medical spa options that we offer at our Long Island medical spa

As the sun shows itself more this season, you may start to notice more brown spots on your skin. That’s because your body produces extra melanin when it senses it needs to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. That’s also why our skin gets tan. Usually, your spots and tan eventually fade away, but as we age, the spots tend to linger, sometimes permanently.

Intense pulsed light, or IPL, treatments are the perfect solution for eliminating unwanted spots. The dark pigment in your spots absorbs the intense light used in this treatment. The pigment rises up toward the top layers of your dermis and breaks apart. You’ll notice the spot will simply flake away within a week of the treatment. Although it depends on the depth of your spots, on average it will take 3 treatments for you to see the best results.

Request a consultation with our physician assistant, Joanne Vitale, to see whether IPL would be right for you.
