Not that many years ago, the choice to remedy hair loss was either surgery involving “hair plugs” or wearing a toupee. Neither option seemed (or looked) very attractive, and many men simply decided to live with being self-conscious about their receding hair lines.
If you haven’t been paying attention, you might not know it — but those days are over. Advances in hair restoration often surprise even my Long Island patients.
Precision hair transplant surgery now produces results that look so natural, it is truly difficult to tell whether someone has had hair restoration surgery. Many athletes, celebrities, and high-profile business leaders have undergone a hair transplant procedure with little notice. That was the goal all along, of course, but the quiet strides in technological innovation have had the unintended consequence of allowing hair plug misconceptions to persist.
Here’s the upshot: Transformative results are now possible, thanks to the advanced, minimally invasive NeoGraft® system. My Long Island patients see the benefits of hair restoration surgery with NeoGraft emerging about 6 months after the procedure.
Besides the NeoGraft technology itself, there are 3 related reasons that worries about hair plugs are now obsolete:
- I can create a hairline that appears very natural. During the procedure, which I’ve detailed in a previous blog post, we create micro incisions in the treatment area where we place the healthy transplanted follicles. As hair restoration specialists, we place the follicles at angles that mimic the patient’s natural hair growth pattern.
- There is no visible scarring at the donor sites. There are essentially 2 ways to harvest hair follicles for transplant. NeoGraft is an automated form of follicular unit extraction (FUE), which can also be performed manually. This method allows for scattered extraction of hairs, which leads to only tiny scars. The second technique is called follicular unit transplantation (FUT), which is often called the “strip” method. That name stems from fact that the surgeon surgically removes a narrow, horizontal strip from the back of the scalp. Hair follicles are harvested from the strip. One of the disadvantages of this method is the visible scar created. That’s not the case with NeoGraft.
- Hair follicles can be transplanted on the order of 1 to 4 hairs at a time (versus 10 to 20 using older methods). This precision is the key to making hair plugs a thing of the past. We remove hair from the donor site in natural groups of 1 to 4 follicles using the NeoGraft system. These transplanted follicles will continue to grow where the patient is experiencing hair loss.
