It’s no secret that surgical breast augmentation routinely tops the list of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. But at my Long Island plastic surgery practice, and at practices around the country, breast enhancement is gaining a tough competitor.
According to recent statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons®, body contouring options are steadily on the rise. In 2013, the number of butt augmentations with fat grafting saw a 16% increase from 2012, while male breast reduction jumped by 11%. A lesser-known procedure, calf augmentation, rose by 31%. These aren’t isolated statistics, however. In recent years, the number of upper arm lifts performed throughout the U.S. also saw a huge increase, possibly due to the influence of public figures such as Michelle Obama.
So what’s behind this increase? It’s only speculation, but many people believe that our culture’s growing emphasis on lean, healthy-looking bodies is beginning to catch up to the desire for large breasts. New surgical options and safer, more effective techniques are also giving patients the confidence to undergo procedures that they previously wouldn’t have considered.
As the numbers indicate, there’s never been a better time to pursue a body contouring procedure. At our practice, we offer time-tested body options for safely improving the appearance of your own natural contours.
