Breast Reduction - Recovery & Results

Breast Reduction
Before & After Photos

Immediately following your breast reduction on Long Island at our plastic surgery center, your breasts will be bandaged and you will need to wear a surgical bra to support your breasts. Dr. Romanelli may use drainage tubes to remove excess blood and fluids from your breasts. These drains will be removed a few days after your surgery. You will experience some bruising, swelling and some discomfort. But any pain can be easily managed with prescribed medication. You will want to rest for a couple of days and avoid any physical activities that require you to reach above your head or bend down.

In most cases you may shower after 48 hours. The vast majority of stitches are located under the skin, and dissolve naturally. There are some stitches which will be removed after 7 to 10 days. Nipples may be super-sensitive or numb after surgery, but generally recover sensation over a few months to a year. You will need to continue to wear a surgical or support bra for up to 6 weeks.

Dr. Romanelli will provide a comprehensive recovery guide to help you return to your normal, social activities and to resume any exercise routines without damaging your results. Your scars will be pink after the sutures are removed, and will mature into less visible white scars after a few months. While scars are generally inevitable with breast reduction surgery, there are many treatments available to minimize or correct unfavorable scars, should they occur, including ointments, silicone strips, lasers, cortisone injections and scar revision.

Because the results of breast reduction surgery are immediate, even with swelling and bruising, you may be excited to go out and experience your new look. Being patient during your recovery will help you heal completely and can reduce the amount of visible scarring.

Breast reduction results are generally permanent, as long as your weight remains stable, but may be affected by subsequent pregnancies. Gravity, weight fluctuation and subsequent child bearing may cause your breasts to sag, but you should never again experience the pain or health issues associated with large pendulous breasts.
