Rhinoplasty - Recovery & Results
Rhinoplasty recovery requires a little patience and perseverance. Most of our Long Island patients are surprised by the lack of pain associated with nose surgery, and use only small amounts of pain medication.
A plastic splint is usually placed over the bridge of the nose at the completion of surgery, and is usually removed 5 to 6 days following your procedure. Dr. Romanelli rarely uses packing, but if breathing passages are corrected plastic splints may be placed within the nose. Internal sutures will be self absorbing; external stitches will be removed 3 to 5 days following your surgery.

Initially there may be some on and off bleeding which requires changing a small gauze under your nostrils a few times a day. You will use cold compresses for a few days to minimize bruising and swelling. Generally some bruising lasts for 7 to 14 days. You will be able to return to light exercise one week after surgery. Most people return to work or school in a week or 10 days. Swelling reduces quickly, although the nose continues to thin out for months.
You will need to be gentle with your nose for at few weeks. You will need to wear sunscreen whenever you are outdoors and avoid contact sports that might be dangerous to your nose.
The nose will feel a little numb and sensitive for a few weeks, which is normal. Dr. Romanelli will provide a comprehensive recovery guide to help you return to your normal, social activities and to resume any exercise routines without damaging your results.
For most of our patients on Long Island, the initial results of rhinoplasty are seen immediately after the splint is removed. Then some swelling occurs, which reduces over the next few months. Usually the nose looks great by 3 months, but there is a small amount of swelling which remains, and you might not see your final results for up to one year. Nose surgery results are permanent, and most patients are very happy with their final results.
