Your Long Island Liposuction Procedure
At Romanelli Cosmetic Surgery, liposuction can be performed under a sedative or light general anesthesia (given by our board certified MD Anesthesiologist) as an outpatient surgery. The surgery generally takes 1 to 2 hours.
The exact plan for your liposuction surgery will depend on the area being treated, the amount of fat to be removed, and your skin and muscle tone. Dr. Romanelli uses the tumescent method, in which a solution of saline, local anesthesia and adrenaline is injected directly into each fat deposit. The adrenaline in the injection helps to reduce swelling and bruising.

After making small incisions, Dr. Romanelli inserts a cannula (a very thin tube) into the fat deposit. The cannula is used to suction out fat deposits and sculpt the area to your desired shape.
Dr. Romanelli commonly uses Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL), a technique that allows greater control and precision in the performance of liposuction. What makes PAL special is that the cannula is attached to a motorized handle that gently vibrates the thin tube forward and back. That makes liposuction easier on the plastic surgeon, because the surgeon doesn't have to push so hard back and forth. But more importantly, Dr. Romanelli is able to more carefully and precisely sculpt away the excess fat under the skin. His energy is focused on refinement, not force.
With PAL we can target fat cells in difficult areas of the body:
- Upper abdomen
- Flanks
- Hips, and
- Back
The results are the same as with traditional liposuction. But the fat is removed more easily, with less stress to the body, and less bruising.
