Breast Augmentation - Recovery & Results

Breast Augmentation
Before & After Photos

Immediately following your breast augmentation on Long Island at our plastic surgery center, Dr. Romanelli will tape a small gauze dressing over the area of incision and a surgical bra and/or a stabilizing band will be applied to your breasts. Some discomfort, such as a feeling of pressure, is common during the first day or two following your breast surgery. Any pain is easily managed with prescribed medications. Placing cool compresses on the upper chest can help alleviate any discomfort, as well. Although you will experience some swelling, there's generally little if any bruising.

You will want to rest for a couple of days and avoid any physical activities that require you to bend down or reach above your head. You may resume showering approximately 48 hours after surgery. Driving can be resumed when you feel safe in controlling the wheel; for most patients, this is 3 to 4 days following their breast augmentation. Although most of the stitches dissolve naturally, Dr. Romanelli will want to see you back at our plastic surgery office in 2 to 4 days to remove the few stitches not located under the skin. At first, scars will be pink, but they should mature into less visible white scars after a few months.

Following their breast enhancement, most Long Island patients feel well enough around 1 week to resume light exercise such as walking. After about 2 to 3 weeks, you should be able to resume jogging or running, as well as any lower body resistance exercises. You should refrain from any upper body exercises, such as pec flys or push-ups, until at least 6 weeks following your breast enlargement. Up until this time, most patients are most comfortable wearing a soft sports bra. Dr. Romanelli will tell you exactly when you can return to wearing underwire bras, but for most patients, it is around 6 weeks. Your nipples may feel super-sensitive or even numb at first, but generally recover sensation over a few months to a year.

Dr. Romanelli will provide you with a comprehensive recovery guide prior to your surgery.

It's understandable that you will want to show off your new look just as soon as possible, but please do not jump back into strenuous activities too quickly. Be patient.

While your new breast fullness and shape will be long lasting, gravity, weight fluctuation and subsequent child bearing may cause changes to your breasts. Additionally, breast implants may require additional surgical procedures in the future. The belief that "every 10 years or so you have to re-do your breast implants" is an internet legend.

The facts? There is a deflation rate with saline breast implants of generally about 2 to 3% over a total of 7 to 10 years. Should a saline implant deflate, the saltwater is safely absorbed (because the breast loses size, the implant should be replaced). If a silicone implant is discovered to have torn, while the breast size will stay the same, the implant should be changed.

Breast augmentation surgery is not re-done on an automatic basis. Revisionary surgery is performed only if and when it is needed. For instance, some women will have sagging of their breasts after pregnancy, breast feeding or weight gain, and may desire a breast lift sometime in the future. Other women may wish to increase the size of their breast implants after a few years.

Breast augmentation results are generally excellent, and the vast majority of Long Island women are thrilled with their new look.
